A Thermography Case Study

DR. W.N. DUDLEY, DC, PC

A nineteen-year-old male had right Colles fracture, surgery at right ear for sebaceous cyst, and also had nasal surgery. He was on two drugs for neck pain for three years.

Cervical x-rays were innocent for pathology, there was a right rotation of the fourth cervical, normal cervical curve.

Physical examination revealed no abnormalities; orthopedic tests were within normal ranges. There was a positive left Adson' sign.

The initial thermogram revealed a right third cervical neuropathy noted by cooling of the dermatome on that side, and a cooling of the deltoid area when compared bilaterally (as shown in the left view).

The deltoid display indicates the area of surface display of the fifth cervical sensory nerve in its dermal path. It is the only surface distribution of the sensory portion of the fifth cervical nerve.

The adjustments consisted of Gonstead type cervical chair corrections that were readily accepted and quickly relieved the chronic stiffness of the neck. There was a set-back in the care when the patient fell from a ladder; however, no residual effects were noted.

As shown on the follow-up scan (right view), the deltoid display is even in its emission, and it can be assumed that the fifth cervical nerve is functioning.

Comparison of the left views to the right shows that the thermal emission is nearly even, and the patient can be dismissed. His symptoms had relieved after the second week of spinal correction.
